To get it clear why I step back for a while, I write this post. It is not because of the National Omkat Day. It is not because of the lack of inspiration or ideas. Serious matters in real life need to be handled and do take most (read: all) of my time. So, I have to choose with pain in my heart.
I do not quit, I will be back as soon as possible. In the mean while you have to be patient. Have fun and we will meet again.

My choice is clear. After a lot of doubts I made my choice. To be sure I made the right choice I read Merel Roze's doubts about what to choose which were almost the same as my doubts. I recalculated the calculation of Elisa of Misdruk and read the party programs of the parties I had to choose from.
This all gave me a clear view on the shortlist I already had. I made my choice and it felt right.
Guess, who have I choosen? Now all I have to do is to vote and that is easy.

Although I have not posted a lot lately, I have been very busy with JW's Braindump. All for the upcoming omkat at the first of June. Today I want to present you the basic colorscheme which will color JW's Braindump after the omkat. The purpose is the get more colorscheme so JW's Braindump will be slightly skinnable. The basic colorscheme is called: Mondriaan
There are two colorschemes, called Monet and Picasso, which will be presented to you in a while. So start guessing which colors will be in those.

De afgelopen week heb ik bewust mijn stem niet verheven op mijn log over de moord op de heer Foruyn. Ik heb hier en daar mijn stem laten horen in de reaktietooltjes op diverse logs. Dat was voor mij meer dan genoeg.
Ik ben gelukkig bespaard gebleven van dreigmailtjes, waarschijnlijk omdat ik zweeg. Ik heb namelijk een duidelijke mening en die zal niet door iedereen ter harte worden genomen. Wel zijn mij andere mailtjes toegezonden waarvan ik met klem afstand neem. Het is goddomme geen heksenjacht.
Ik ga niet verder in detail want ik wil geen spiritus op de roodgloeiende barbeque gooien. Ook wil ik de barbeque niet doven door er een emmer er over te gooien. Dit heeft namelijk een onprettige bijwerking. Bij de volgende barbeque die je wilt houden blijkt de barbeque geroest te zijn en zal op den duur aan de nieuwe hitte bezwijken. De beste manier om een brandende barbeque te laten doven, is door hem uit te laten smeulen ook al is al het vlees geroosterd. En zodra de kolen tot as zijn vergaan en de hitte is vertrokken, kan je je barbeque pas veilig opbergen.
En zoals iedere barbequeliefhebber weet, kan het nasmeulen van de kolen wel enige tijd duren. Tot de laatse vonk gedoofd is, speel je met vuur.

Last Saterday I went to Titanic, the musical to gether with H., her siter R. and R.'s friend R. The musical played in the new Luxor theater in Rotterdam. I like the new Luxor more than the old one already.
The musical itself was not that suprising (the ship still sinks in the end). But the techniques used in the decor were worth seeing. I enjoyed my evening.

Last friday H. and I went to the cinema to see Ice Age. This is the latest animation movie from Fox Studios. Fox Studios is one of the top players in the field of animation movies. The others, in my opinion are: Pixar Animation Studios and Dreamworks.
The story is a little standard but catching enough to keep your attention. Sid, the sloth, do remind me to the clumsy Ed, from Ed, Edd and Eddy. The animations are good, but not the Pixar quality as in Monsters Inc. and Toy Story 2. After all still a must see animation movie.

When I checked my stats at the first of May, I saw something really strange.
.arpa, the old style Arpanet. Wasn't Arpanet the network that was the first step towards nowadays' internet? Yes it was and the full name for Arpanet was Advanced Research Projects Agency Network of the US Department of Defense. It all started in 1969.
Strange, isn't it, being visit by something from the past? It feels like Big Brother is watching me.

The progess for today. A second version of Greymatter has been installed and configured to use it for testing purposes. This Greymatter installation will also be syndicated with RSS (XML news format) feeds. There will a "remember me" option added in the reaction sections. And last but not least a XML RPC call to weblog.com will be added. This weekend I will dig in the Greymatter code to get it working the way I want it to.
Today, I uploaded a new stylesheet and new templates to view the selected colorschemes in the way I had in mind. I can tell you that two selected colorschemes did not pass my tests and a lot of adjustments need to be done to the stylesheet. But I have a few colorschemes left and due to heavy stylesheet usage the changes can be made easily. So do not worry.
Till now everything for the omkat is going well. Sofar I haven't faced Murphy. But that is the terrible thing about Murphy, once he will show up (and he will!), he will keep coming back over and over again. I praise myself very lucky for the days without Murphy sofar and the progress I make on these days.

Today at the 1st of May, I am just one month before the National Omkat Day and starting to turn ideas, concepts and techniques into reality. From now till the 1st of June I rebuild JW's Braindump. Next month version 1.0 will be reality. There is a lot to do and I have little spare time. But the deadline is not killing, so I will survive. I will update you from day to day about the progress of the omkat. You will not be able to see the results yet, but will be informed about what is upcoming in the new release. Oh, by the way, it is my goal to get JW's Braindump cross browser compatible for: Netscape 6.x, Mozilla 1.0, Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0. Any other browser or version will not be supported. If I have time and energy left, Opera 6.0 might also be included in the list of supported browsers.

Today I have implemented and bug fixed the search engine. It seems to be working well now. I also adjusted some tags and meta tags to get JW's Braindump more flexible to change. They were rather technical changes needed for a major change which is planned later this week.

Happiness and sadness stand close to eachother. At the same time I heard the news about Left Eye, the 1000th visited JW's braindump. It is some one from the South of Limburg using a small internet service provider to get online. This meant that 1000 unique visitors (read: IP address per day) visited my site within 2 months. See my hotstat counter fror the real time stats at the moment.
I want to thank you all, who have read this site sofar. Next goal: 10000 unique visitors within a year.
Left Eye (TLC) died in a car accident

I just heard the news. Left Eye, a member from TLC, died in a car accident in Honduras. Damn, this ruins my day. I am a huge fan of TLC. Her voice will still be heard on their upcoming new album later this year. May you rest in peace Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.

 | I made this drawing a week ago, while everybody was guestlogging elsewhere. But somehow I forgot to scan and upload it. Tonight I saw my scrapbook on my desk. So here it is. Although the guestlogging hype has cooled down, the roadsign is still up to date. Suffie moved to his own domain to get rid of Blogger and the popup advertisment. Luckely he continues to serve us with his writings. And Marti? Well, she is redesigning her log twice a day it seems. I guess it is a women's thing. Never knowing what to wear and which color to choose. I still wonder if she will rejoin the national omkat day. The other sign, not readable, does refer today to the 'Loglijst' which isn't working all day already. I hope JeeWee gets it up and running soon, because it is a very handy tool. Update: Just before I posted this, the Loglijst was up and running again. *cheers* |
Never ending story

A ring has now begin and no end. A ring symbolize something never ending. But yesterday the ring, I held, told a different story. Because it laid in my hand it meant the end of something we both didn't want to end.
After a lot of angry words and glances we just stood there in silence. Each staring in another direction with our own thoughts. A decision was made. This was the end. We went our own way.
After work and after being calmed down, we talked. We talked and agreed this could not end. Not here and not now. The ring is back on her finger.

Het schip ligt roerloos op de scherpe rotsen voor de mooie kust. De haven al zichtbaar, verderop langs de kustlijn. De kapitein hangt over de reling in gedachten verzonken. Hij vraagt zich af: 'Hoe heeft dit kunnen gebeuren?'
Een aantal uur daarvoor voer het schip fier over de golven richting de haven. Een lichte regelmatige deining was te voelen op de brug waar de kapitein het sein 'halve kracht vooruit' in plaats van 'volle kracht vooruit' doorgaf aan de machinist in de machinekamer. De machinist, druk als altijd, had al zijn aandacht bij de 2de motor van het schip. Deze haperde nog wel eens en de machinist dacht vandaag de oplossing te hebben gevonden. Het sein van de kapitein kwam niet door. Boven op de brug trachtte de kapitein het schip in koers te houden maar het stevende in volle vaart op de kust af.
Met een schok komt het schip tot stilstand. De machinist rolt door de machinekamer. De kapitein klampt zich vast aan het roer. De motor stopt. Stilte overheerst en de golven klotsen rustig en in regelmaat tegen de romp van het schip. Af en toe maakt het metaal een schurend geluid als het schip door de golven vaster op de rotsen wordt geworpen.
De kapitein tuurt over het water en wacht af. Het water nu op haar laagste stand laat zien dat de rotsen venijnig en scherp zijn, maar zeker bij hoog water niet zichtbaar zijn. Ook niet zichtbaar, waren ze er wel al die tijd. Vanavond bij hoog water zal getracht worden het schip los te trekken van de rotsen. Een riskante operatie omdat de romp van het schip doorboord is door de rotsen. Als het fout afloopt kan het schip scheuren en definitief zinken. Iets wat de kapitein niet hoopt. Uit de machinekamer weerklinkt het geluid van metaal op metaal. De machinist repareert en werkt ijverig door aan de 2de motor van het schip. Op de achtergrond speelt de radio en zacht klinken de klanken van Acda en de Munnick. ...cd voor jou, cd voor mij...
De avond valt.

Yesterday I stumbled upon the site; www.dotlog.org, built by JW. JW? Hey, it wasn't me who built this site, was it?
Of course I knew there would be more JW's around and I started to read his site. Three posts futher I discovered that he was writing about me (See the post 'Identiteitscrisis' on the 16th of April.). I used his my name in the reaction forms of sites we both like to visit. So his and my posts were confusing people and himself. He had a solution to post in the future as JW (.log) but wasn't feeling right about it. Time to react.
I asked him if it really was such a big deal to him. And he tried to convince me to use 'Sandra' as name for my comment posting. Not wanting to expose my feminine side too much, I suggested to use 'jw' in the future and to let him use 'JW' in capitals. JeeWee wasn't an option, because there was already one and J-W is not an option either, because there isn't a - between my two first names.
Did I do right to give in or should I keep using 'JW' instead of 'jw'? What's in a name after all?

Last Tuesday I recieved an e-mail form a well know weblogger with the question to join a very orginal and cool project. I am honered to be asked to join the project. So I answered with: 'Yes, I will join.' But right now I am having cold feet. Will I meet their expectation? More to come about this project as soon my submission has been added to the project and is visible to the public.
I made my entrance at Marti's place last night and posted as guest logger a submission. Scroll back to Wednesday the 17th of April.
And I can report that Project X is going really well. The first increment has to be finished by September. Besides the first increment a few possible chances are getting realistic and my add more value to Project X.
I still can not go into details about everything, so it might still be vague to you. Please be patient.

It is 21.36pm on a sundaynight. The night has fallen and darkness surrounds us in the glow of lights of the gas station nearby. I am driving on a almost empty highway. Just three cars in front of me. The cars in front of me move to the left lane to get past a slower car. I follow them.
A nice red car triggers my attention and for a moment I admire the car. My eyes move back to the road ahead. The first car drives along the gas station. FLASH! What the... FLASH! The second car passed the gas station. H. screams: "A police patrol!" FLASH! Red shades of light fade away in front of my eyes when I check the driving mirror. My eyes glances over the dashboard in front of me. The speed, 140 kilometers an hour but dropping as I slow down in a natural reaction.
Thoughts pop up in my head. What is the speed limit here? 120 km/hour? 3 percent correction on the actual speed, because I am on a highway? What will this cost? Than I hear Helen repeats her question. "How fast were you going?", she asked. I mumble: "Between the 135 and 140". That will cost a lot, she replies. We both wander back to our own thoughts and the radio plays along as if nothing has happened.
Google API and behind the scene maintenance

I started playing with the Google API in combination with Perl. Haven't figured out what to do with if I get it up and running. The Google API is great news for the evolution of websevices which will become more and more common in the near future. Adam Curry has already a functional Google Box, which search on dutch weblog and based on the Google API on his site.
But I have to thank Karma for his post about the Google API. It filled my weekend with coding, debugging and a lot of reading. The final result will come somewhere on this site.
Besides the API I spend a lot of time this weekend with correcting, validating and rewriting a bunch of HTML and CSS. I am down to a few errors I can't fix in HTML (but maybe in Greymmatter) and a few errors (because of IE specific elements) and a few warning in CSS. But with all this copy and pasting of code, I killed my Hotstat counter. I know, I have little readers but none on a sunday?!? I copied the orginal counter code back and hope to finish up the rest tonight.
As you might have noticed, all this coding and debugging has great impact on my posting and the frequency of them. I apoligize for that. I know, I do not meet my own quality standards. JW's Braindump is still in development and will be that way for a while. So be patient, it might be worth waiting for!

You might have noticed that I do not reach my goal to post at least one post a day. How come, you would wonder? Well, there are several reasons to mention. Let's write down a few.
1. This weekend I had to do a lot of social enginering to do. Or in other words, I went out with friends, had to babysit, had a birthdayparty to go to and so on and on. So yes, I have seen the other side of the border and do have a life IRL (read: in real life).
2. My desktop PC at home is unstable and shows me "blue screens of death" any time I do not want them to see. That is the reason I started to get my PC ready to migrate from Win98SE to Win2000Prof SP1. Started moving old stuff from disk to CD. Repartioned the partions so they meet my confguration standards. Made a list of applications that will appear again on my Win2000 system and uninstalled the ones that met their EOL. (read: End Of Lifetime). And finally checked my system as it is now with the Win2000 readiness tool. Hope to finish this job next weekend. So a note for any one who has borrowed CDs from me. I want them back as soon as possible!
3. I have drawn a few scetches on paper for the look and feel of JW's Braindump after the "National Omkat Day". Combined colors to a couple usuable colorschemes, which you can vote on in the near future. While using Photoshop, I scanned some old material and started retouching it. The results of this will be posted when ready.
4. I will call this "Project X" till I am able to tell more about it. For now it is to confidential to tell more about it than this. It will take a lot of my spare time, but I am more than willing to spend my time on this one. I promise I will update you as soon as the project allows me.
5. Last be not least, I am learning Perl to get a good view on what Greymatter is doing in code and how to modify it so it will serve me to the most. I am adding code and adjusting code in a local version of Greymatter. When it is stable and bugfree I will use it on here.
So this were the main reasons, besides the basic tasks in householding, why I have not posted every day. But more and good stuff are up to come. It might be hard to be patient till the changes are available to you. All I can say; it will be worth waiting for...

I stumbled upon this gadget while browsing the nokia site, looking for a solution to get Data Suite 3.0a on Windows 2000 interact with my Nokia 6150 via a datacable or an infrared port.
Maybe it is time to get a new gadget although the 6150 is still working fine because the 6150 is almost a technical fossile. With the 6310i it is possible to call from almost any place on earth, due to the triple band technology. Hmm, nice reason to travel aroun the globe.

I definitely need to ride the roller coaster 'Goliath' this year. It is time for a good adrenaline shot again. Stupid, Six Flags Holland has no information about this roller coaster available on their site. Not even in their news section.
The park opens it's doors this weekend. I think it will be crowded because of the nice weather that is coming up. Due to other plans, I will not ride Goliath this weekend but I will ride Goliath and all the other roller coasters (especially La Via Volta, because I like the backward sensation) in Six Flags Holland this year. That is a promise to myself!

Finally back home.
Just like Charlotte, I used my body in a sportive way tonight. Only tonight I had to use it very intensive with the result that I can feel every muscle in my body. Playing full court basketball in fast break mode is exhausting. And besides that push-ups, sprints, slides, 2 on 2 and 3 games of giving everything you got were the cause of all this.
Time to lay down and give my body some rest.

I am fine tuning the lay-out of the site. But somehow a nagging white space, just beside the top logo/image appeared. And I can't get rid of it again. I guess I am overlooking just a simple quote or linebreak. But the sandman used his sand on my eyes, so I am better of in bed sleeping now.
Till tommorow when the quest for the nagging whitespace continues. For now; sweet dreams.
Update: I found the problem at once this morning. It was so simple, but I must have overlooked it lastnight because I was tired. The problem was that I can't count. Count with me; an images of 480 pixels plus a left- and right-border of 1 pixel each and a left- and right-margin of 10 each, makes 502 pixels instead of the 500 pixels width of my main table. So the 502 pixels overruled the 500 pixel width.
Still working to finish up the unfinished parts of the site, but the sun keeps calling my name.

To see Monsters Inc.
Update: Although I had seen Monsters Inc. in DivX format on my laptop already, I had to see it on wide screen and with THXtm sound. Well, tonight I did, together with H. The animation techniques were amazing. Pixar improved their techniques compared to Toy Story 2 really well. The animation of the fur as James P. Sullivan walked across the screen was really breath taking.
A real must see!

I am done with work for today. I have to rush home to do some grocery shopping and prepare dinner for L., G.J. - friends - and of course H. But I can't make up my mind what to cook. So help me out. What should I cook?

Brains at work

I got at work early today, totally awake and fresh to use my brains. The project I am working on is difficult and the technology is new to me. For insiders, I am writing a generic interfacing tool between SQL Server databases to import/export Excel files and XML files based on DTS. The manipulation and translation of the data between import and export in the interface is user-definable.
So, my brains are working at high speed and need all their time with this project. As result the finishing of this site and new post are delayed during working hours (7.30AM - 5.30PM). In the evenings my brains will mainly be dedicated to this site or H. should have other plans. I found a box with old drawings yesterday, when cleaning the attic, which are nice to be shown here. But they first need to be scanned optimized and such.
My brains indicate that this little break from work is over and I need to get back into my source code.

Due to connectivity problems at JW's Braindump's hosting provider, JW's Braindump could not be reached in the past few hours. The problem should be solved now.
Update: One of their main routers failed and had to be rebooted manually. The problem status, according the hosting provider, is solved.

Due to the lack of time I couldn't finish the whole site in time before the deadline (21.00h CET, 15th of March 2002). The most important part is working right now; the main page and the archives. You should also be able to react on any post. I will update the rest as soon as possible.

Diergaarde Blijdorp - Rotterdam Zoo

I went to the zoo of Rotterdam, Diergaarde Blijdorp, with H., C., their kids I. and N. and ofcourse my girlfriend H. last weekend. We were all (especially me) curious how the new attraction, the oceanium, would be. I had the change to use my old Canon Powershot 600 Digital camera again. Well, I did and here are the results (click on the thumbnail to see an enlarged version):

Sidenote: due to the lack of light in some parts of the oceanium, I had to retouch the photos with Adobe Photoshop. The rest of the photos is just the way they were shot.
JW's Braindump in testing phase

For the moment JW's Braindump is in testing mode. This is needed to resolve any error and bug from the code and templates I use. To test the site really well, I need people who are willing to test the site in different browsers from the browsers I tested.
Therefor I need people running any version of Internet Explorer on a Mac OS, people running any version of Netscape on any platform, people running any version of Opera on any platform and people running Internet Explorer 3.0 or 4.0 on any platform. JW's Braindump test plan
Hereby the test plan to test the functionality and lay-out of this site. Look at it as through the eye of an eagle. Anything and I mean anything that feels not 100% ok to you, needs to be reported.I do not want to hear you like or dislike the way the lay-out looks. But test it as it is and see if it forfills it's purpose.Functionality
Test any link, button, image on it's clickablity. Fill in any form you see. See if the process of clicking, linking and entering data into forms is logical to you and if no error occur. Javascript errors and CGI errors are very important to report. And if you report a functionality error, try to inform me about the actions that you did just before the error occurred.
Lay-out
I want the lay-out be tested on consistancy through out the whole site. Take a good look to see if I missed a pixel or two in the design. Look at the tekst and see if white spaces and font types are suitable for the readablity. And finally I want to hear what you think of the lay-out. Do you like or not? And if not, why?
